LGBT Statistics in Japan

LGBT Statistics in Japan

In 2019, the Japan LGBT Research Institute researched the rate of LGBT people in Japan. Out of the 428,036 people that participated in the survey, 10% were LGBT or of a Sexual Minority.

They also researched the rates of sexual orientation, where
93% came out as Heterosexual,
0.9% Homosexual,
2.8% Bisexual,
0.9% Asexual,
1.4% S.O. Questioning
and 1% Other

When it came to gender identity,
93.3% came out as Cisgender
1.8% Transgender
2.5% X Gender
G.I. Question 1.2%
and 0.6% Other

Also, a survey conducted by Yasuharu Hidaka, a professor in social epidemiology at Takarazuka University School of Nursing in school, showed that out of about 15,000 LGBT people, 58% came out to say that they had been bullied while in elementary, junior high and high school. 21% said they had refused to go to school at one time or another.

13% said that the teachers helped them in some way, while 67% said that teachers didn't help them at all.

OPINIONS:
At first, I was a bit surprised at how low the rate of LGBT people in Japan there were, but then I also realized how hard it must be for a lot of people to come out here in Japan. I feel like a lot of people may also be confused about their sexuality and gender due to how the education and understanding of gender issues are lacking here. Also, while it's not only a Japan problem, seeing how high the rate of people being bullied due to their sexuality is not only sad but also sickening.
