"Don't Say Gay" bill

"Don't Say Gay" Bill

The "Don't Say Gay" bill is what prompted our wanting to start this NGO. Researching about this bill has made us more aware of the urgency even though this bill is in the USA.

What is "Don't Say Gay" bill?

Parental Rights in Education bill states that lessons about sexual orientation are banned outright in kindergarten through third grade. It also prohibits lessons in other grades unless they are "age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate." The people who oppose this bill claim that it's very vague and a judge will have the ability to deny any kind of teaching whether that be just a mention of the teacher's same-sex spouse or a reading of a novel with homosexual characters in it.

When and who was it signed by?

The law was signed March 28, 2022 by Florida republican Governor Ron DeSantis.

What does the White House say?

“This is not an issue of ‘parents’ rights.’ This is discrimination, plain and simple." They seem to be opposed to this bill as of current.

What does this have to do with Japan?

Japan doesn't have much gender/sexual identity education in the first place, and the government might be inclined to follow suit of America.

Opinions

This bill is a very controversial topic in the US right now and it will surely impact other countries, including Japan, as well. This was the reason I decided to research more into sexual and gender identity education in this country and how it can be reformed for the better, so it's a very relevant issue in my opinion. American politics of the top government opposing the Supreme Court aside, I think it's important, now more than ever, to understand the importance of educating both kids and adults, gender and sexual identity.

  1. So basically, some people who are for this bill think that schools do not have to cover education about LGBTQ+ and that it is all up to the parents if they will teach their children about LGBTQ+, when we are entering a world where there is more diversity than ever before? I have heard of stories of transgender kids who went through there transitions at the age of seven. Some kids feel or know for themselves what they truly are before proper education in school. I do not have enough knowledge on this topic to give a full thorough opinion, but if you think it that way, I feel like it’s important that we teach children about the concept of LGBTQ+ and that there are various kinds of people in the world which we cannot categorize into simply two things.
