Goals of our NGO

Goals of our NGO

Broad goal:

To create an unbiased non-judgemental environment for kids to grow up and be educated in.

Semi-broad goals:

1. Implement gender neutral restrooms and locker rooms in public facilities.
Implantation of unisex restrooms/locker rooms would increase the safety and comfort of transgender people and intersex/non-binary people. It would also raise awareness for the normalization of gender fluidity.

2. Reform "家庭総合" textbook
Currently, the textbook supported by the ministry of education completely disregards non-binary genders and homosexuality claiming "It is important that a man and a woman cooperate to create a familial lifestyle".

3. Support trans kids in sports
Controversy surrounding transgender people participating in sports competitions have been long debated. I believe that trans kids should have the opportunity to enjoy competitive sports nevertheless. Funding sports events that allow transgender kids participation or creating an event on our own would be two ideas.

Specific goals:

1. Hold zoom/physical meetings on a weekly basis

Holding meetings for anyone who wants to join, to educate each other on LGBT rights, experiences and events. Sharing LGBT related novels or movies that peak our interest, essentially creating an environment where everyone, especially the kids joining, would feel unjudged and welcomed.

2. Post on social media
Gathering supporters through social media is something we can do promptly. Sharing statistics about education on gender and sexual identity is the first step to intrigue the people.
Starting a Youtube channel or a tiktok might also be a way to spread our voice. It could also lead to motitization as well.

  1. I liked the 2nd goal. I believe that the best way to change things in any country is by changing the education system. So, naturally, I think that if people can change the textbook and the way that the issue is taught in schools, I think that it could have a huge impact on how people think about things in the future. I also thought that it may help educate the children’s parents as well, since children show their books to their parents and will talk with them. Overall, in my opinion, a great idea.

  2. I think the scale of your goals is appropriate in that they are definitely ambitious, but they all seem like ones that would be achievable if approached in systematic and smart ways. The particular combination of goals have coherence but, as far as I can tell, there is no existing NGO that deals with this particular set of goals.

I wonder how, in the classes you've taken at AGU so far, you feel your education (and educational environment) here is inclusive and supports an understanding of gender and sexual identity that you think needs to be communicated.
